Teaching experience

Since August 2017, I have been teaching communication and contract drafting to law students at Texas A&M University School of Law in Fort Worth. From fall 2015 to spring 2017, I taught technical communication and related courses to undergraduates and grad students at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I have taught at the university and professional school level for 15 years. From 2004 to 2010 and 2013 to 2015, I taught first-year writing, research, and legal analysis as an adjunct instructor at the University of Minnesota Law School. From 2010 to 2015, I taught courses in technical communication and first-year composition as a graduate-student instructor in the Writing Studies Department at the University of Minnesota. For more details about my teaching, including teaching philosophy and student evaluations, see the teaching page on Rhetoricked.com.

Legal experience

I have more than 13 years of experience in private legal practice, focusing much of my work on electronic databases and complex compilations, e-commerce, web branding issues, rule-making for online communities, and trade associations and non-profits. I have deep doctrinal and practical experience in copyright, license agreements, and corporate governance; I have also counseled clients on trademark, domain-name, and antitrust matters. I have a further two years of experience as general counsel and vice president of legal affairs for two small information technology companies; I was responsible for corporate governance and legal compliance.

Management & communications experience

I have nearly 15 years of experience in business management and communications, most recently as chief staff executive of a non-profit information technology company, a subsidiary of an industry trade association. There I had managerial responsibility for all communications, including marketing, customer and shareholder relations, and technical documentation. I supervised a staff of a dozen persons and was directly responsible to a board of directors for all financial reporting, management, and strategic planning. In the five years preceding that position, I served as communications director for a non-profit trade association with 2,000 individual members and as a business graphic designer for a large international consulting firm (predecessor of Deloitte).
